This morning’s Times brought news that Dubai, sponsor of major events across the sports’ spectrum, denied a visa to Shahar Peer, a member of the women’s professional tennis tour (WTA) because she is Israeli.

The Healthy Kidney 10K is one of the top NYRR races of the year, and I ran my best race of 2008 there. It is the top 10K for men (the women have the Mini) put on by NYRR, which brings in top elite runners (not that I ever see them), and is also a Club race. But it is sponsored by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is one of those emirates.

So the issue: should the UAE be the main sponsor for the race? If it is, should the race be a Club race? I think not, to both questions.
