For the second year in a row, Oregon was first and Iona second at the NCAA men’s XC Championship. I have some affinity for Iona College being that I attended Iona Prep many, many years ago. But more immediately is the fact that I see members of the team on the trails with some frequency and it always gives a bit of a chill.

Several times I’ve passed (going in opposite directions of course) a slight black guy who I assume is a Kenyan at Iona and he’ll wave and have a great smile as he breezes by. Seeing joy and smoothness on that level always leads me to pick up the pace and relax the stride.

It was inspiring to see Galen Rupp of Oregon pick up the pace to get the individual win. He gets a lot of grieve, but he’s proving himself to be the real deal.
